KING COMBS CYNMOB
KING COMBS AND CYNMOB CHANNEL THE ’90S FOR “PLAYA HATE” AND “BERRY” (KING COMBS CYNMOB )
King Combs is updating the sample-based sound on which Bad Boy Records built its legacy. While Mase once boasted, “Take hits from the ’80s? But do it sound so crazy?” young Christian Combs has doubled down on that formula by flipping classics from the ’90s and 2000s.
Of course, King Combs is the son of Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs—but this is no case of hip hop nepotism. The young dude has bars, and so does his team, the 15-member group CYNMOB. The crew dropped two new songs yesterday that are ripe with that ’90s nostalgia. “Playa Hate,” which features Kai Ca$h and Shaqnlivin, prominently samples Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down,” pitching up the singer’s timeless croons.
They also dropped “Berry,” a mellow, punchline-heavy cut that nods to perennial #WCW Halle Berry—the song’s artwork even features a photo of the actress from the 2001 movie Swordfish.
King Combs and his CYN clique made waves earlier this year when they dropped a posse freestyle over Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid in Full” that went viral. Check out that video below.
